PRICELESS DREAMS...(TWO)
Leticia's uncle took the letter and read it. He was full aware of the contents. He folded it and put it in his pocket. He then began walking towards the main house and as he did he said, "I have told Augustus to stop writing me these letters, we are family and he can come to me for anything". Leticia knew too well that what his uncle was saying was all for show because one time she eaves dropped on one of his telephone conversations in which he lamented how his brother was milking him dry. She smiled and said "I keep telling him but he refuses to hear me out". Soon, her uncle was in and out of the house and brought her some money and she set off back home. As she walked down the quiet street, a salon car stopped by her and a tall gentleman stepped out of the car. Leticia continued past the gentleman. "Excuse me, you look familiar and I think we have met before" the young man said. Leticia, who was known for her cheeky attitude laughed, turned and said, "If you are referring to me, I think this is the worst pick up line I have ever heard". The guy walked towards her and held her by the arm, "I knew it, you were at Gifty's party in school". Leticia stopped for a while and took a long look at him and realized he was familiar. When she realized that he was right, she said, "I am sorry to have passed that comment earlier", she said. "How are you?". "Do you live around here?", she added. "Yes I do, my house is a few blocks from here", the guy said. Frank was also a student at Leticia's university. They met at a drink up organised by her friend on campus. Frank offered to give Leticia a ride back home so she joined him in his car and he drove off. They had a hearty chat on topics ranging from school to politics to ambitions and of course, relationships. As they got to Leticia's house, they exchanged phone numbers and parted ways. Leticia walked into the house and was welcome by her father, "Was he at home?". "What did he say when he saw you?" "I hope he did not get angry", he anxiously said as he counted the money given to him by Leticia. "I am going to the market to get some stuff for stew, so put the rice on fire", he said. Since their mother left, Leticia's father had painstakingly learnt to take up the role of the 'woman' in the house and did everything a mother was supposed to do. He even knew the menstrual cycle of his daughters by heart. Leticia called her youngest sibling to assist her. Rose was the youngest sibling of Leticia. She had the tendency of being very observant and had over the years come to know everyone who lived in their compound house. She had come up with a very funny but apt way of describing everyone in the house. There were five separate rooms in their house. One belonged to a young lady who she referred to as the "Consultant". Rose claimed that every night, a different man came to spend hours in her room and she thought she was helping them with their issues. There was a couple in the house who she referred to as the "fighters". The fighters had their room closest to that of Leticia and the family. The couple were always making love aggressively on their squeaky bed and the noise could be heard in Leticia's room. Rose, as inquisitive as she was, always wanted to know what was happening so she asked her dad and he said they were fighting because she was too little to understand what was going on. The third room was occupied by the "prayer warrior"; a young university dropout who always claimed that he was called by God to become an evangelist. He was always heard praying loudly in the cool of the night when everyone else was sleeping and he disturbed the whole house with his strange prayer topics. Rose recalled that one time she heard him say a prayer for lottery operators. The last room was occupied by an old woman and her grandson. Rose called the old woman "step mother" because she overheard her say she was in love with her dad. Her dad had the laugh of his life when Rose informed him about the old woman's feelings for him. Everyone who lived in the house was fond of Leticia and her family for their resilient approach towards life. That night, Frank called Leticia and asked her out on a date. Her father was skeptical about the whole idea of going out with Frank but upon constant persuasion, he agreed to allow her go but on condition that she came home early. At a quarter past seven o'clock that evening, Frank was already in front of Leticia's house waiting for her. She came out looking very beautiful. She joined him and they drove off. He took her to a restaurant where they had some drinks and food and continued with their chat. "Frank, please I have to leave now, I don't want my dad to get worried", Leticia said when she realized how late it was getting. "No problem", Frank replied. When they got to Leticia's house, they sat in the car and continued chatting. All of a sudden they found themselves kissing each other. "Frank got carried away and started for Leticia's breasts but she quickly stopped him and pulled his hand out of her brassiere. "Please stop it",she said, people walk in and out of the house anytime and I do not want my dad to kill both of us should he walk out to see us in this position". She quickly opened the door, closed it as she alighted and bent over revealing the top of her shinning bosoms. "Thanks for the date, I really had fun". "I hope we can do it again some other time", Leticia said. "Why not? The pleasure is all mine",Frank said as he started his engine. As Leticia started walking to the gate of her house, Frank called out to her and asked, "Tish, does this mean we are going out?". Leticia turned and smiled and with a blush on her face she said, "Let me think about it"..........More soon. PRICELESS DREAMS
Leticia held the baby loosely over the open cesspit and away from Frank. "Even if you so much as think of taking another step closer, I am going to drop this baby into this pit and it would be a lose-lose situation for both of us and for you especially", she dared Frank. Frank stood there already furious but at the same time helpless because he knew that the Leticia he had known earlier had changed completely and he knew that her threats were anything but empty. He knew also that any wrong move he made was going to be disastrous. "Tish, that little girl is your baby; our baby, at least think of the number of months you had to carry her in your womb, think of the frustration associated with her birth and do not take any decision that both of us are going to regret", Frank begged as he stretched his hands toward the little baby girl in a frantic effort of saving her from being dropped. "Tell me if what you feel for me is love or just pity? "Tell me if you would even be standing here right now with me if not for the reason that we have a daughter together. I trusted you Frank, the least you could have done was to reciprocate that trust, instead, you stabbed me when I least expected and left me begging for dear life. The only way I can settle this score is by undoing what the two of us have done", Leticia said as she dangerously dangled the baby over the open cesspit. "So does that give you the right to play God? Does that give you the power to decide who lives and who dies? What we feel for each other is between the two of us and it is besides the point of you taking it out on this innocent baby",Frank argued. All this while, the little baby was crying uncontrollably but the two adults cared less about the tears and screams of the baby or the stench emanating from the cesspit and kept on arguing with each other. "I never expected things to turn out this way but unfortunately, they have Frank, they have", Leticia continued as tears rolled down her cheeks...
(SOME YEARS EARLIER)
Leticia was the second of four children. She had entered into the university the previous year and was pursuing a degree in History and Philosophy. She woke up from the mattress she shared with all her siblings and there was no telling the chaos on that little mattress with hands on other heads, legs flying on top of each other, snores in different pitches coming from open mouths and noses placed dangerously at 'lose ends' where flatulence could cause one to wake up feeling sick. It was a Saturday and she was on her first vacation from school. Leticia and her siblings lived with their father in a small apartment. Their mother had left their father for some rich man because she could no longer stand the number of years they wallowed in abject poverty with no hope in sight. She paid them occasional visits but she had grown too shy to stay so she only dropped off some foodstuffs and money when she had the chance but with time, the visits reduced and her absence was no longer an issue for even their youngest daughter who was about turning six years old. Leticia arrived home the previous night and instantly, her dad sent her on the errand she hated the most. There was close to nothing to feed on exceptt a cup of uncooked rice and two tins of sardine in their makeshift kitchen in the corner of their single room apartment. She was therefore asked to visit her uncle with a letter written by her dad to ask him for some money to feed themselves. Leticia always felt sad when she was on this errand and her only wish was that life and fate should have been fair to her poor father who had to fight tooth and nail to see them through life after their mother left. She always had a feeling that she and her family were being a nuisance to her uncle who was already paying the fees of two of her younger siblings. Her dad was a pupil teacher in the District Assembly school and his salary was woefully inadequate to support the entire family. She knocked on the gate of her uncle's house and was ushered in by a steward. "Is Uncle Charles at home?", Leticia asked the steward who had come to be well aware of the reason for such visits. "Yes, sister, he is in the garden", the steward replied pointing toward a beautiful rock garden which was not there the last time she paid her uncle a visit. She had this inferiority complex from childhood so she trembled as she stood before her 'mighty' uncle. "Good morning Uncle Charles, Daddy asked me to deliver this to you", she said as she handed over the letter to him.....More soon. My name is Edwin Oko Lamptey and this is a "story about a journey". IN HONOUR OF OUR UNSUNG HEROES
When I woke up this morning, I took my phone and started typing "Happy", my phone being a smart phone suggested the next plausible words as "birthday", "mother's", "day" and "new". I started then to type "Happy father's..." and the only word my smart phone could suggest was "money". Does this ring a bell? I laughed out loud. I drew the conclusion that even our phones cannot remember this occasion but see fathers only as money providers. . A man, in that case a father, plays a role like a ninja in the shadows. They do not come out plainly but they get the job done. A father, just like a goalkeeper, is not shown much but in the face of rushing opposition, he is the last man standing and he saves the day; like the captain of a ship, the father ensures that he stays on a sinking ship till all onboard are safe; like a firefighter, he is called upon only in the hottest fiery moments to quench the flames; like a shepherd, a father sticks his life out for his flock; like the policeman, a father is the first line of defence when an enemy attacks in the night. Some father's are always present but their absence may not be missed. Some fathers are always absent but their presence is sorely missed. Either way, fathers are worth the honour. A father is an honour. As a father, you might not be carrying out all your responsibilities for one reason or the other. Let us sit up. I honour all boys to men. Let us keep working in secret and The Ultimate Powers that be would honour us. To the ones who receive all the attention, praises and gifts on their day, you have received your reward in full. I did not mention any names, they know themselves.
In honour of the fathers who were, the ones we have, the ones that are and the ones we aim to be. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY. My name is Edwin Oko Lamptey and this is the "best day on any calendar" RAT (RANDOM AFRICAN THOUGHT).

EDMUND'S ESCAPADES X
Jemima was scared of what the gynaecologist was going to do if she answered him in the affirmative. She knew that from the onset she had already put herself in his bad books so she had to improvise to save face. "Abortion?, no oh". "I started menstruating a week ago and I am still menstruating so I figured that there must be something wrong because the maximum number of days that I normally have my period is five days", Jemima said. "Lady, please do not insult my intelligence, I believe that there is a big gap in your fallopian tube and I see something like dismembered parts of a foetus". "Anyway, who am I to judge you?". "I have stopped the bleeding and I am going to prescribe some drugs for you to help the tubes heal". "You can dress up now, my job here is done". "Thank you very much doctor, I am grateful". The doctor jokingly teased Jemima by saying, "I guess you can now count me as part of the people you have been intimate with because I have seen what they were begging you to show them just that in my case, you gave me a free show". "Oh doctor, I am shy", Jemima said as she dressed up and waved goodbye to the nurses who were already giggling because of what the doctor had said. Edmund was sitting on a bench outside the consulting room waiting for Jemima to finish. Jemima got there and hugged Edmund from behind and said, "Eddie, I am going to be fine, okay". "The doctor has stopped the bleeding, please take me home before my mother calls again. "I have already missed her call twice". "When they got out of the hospital, they walked down the road in silence to the bus stop. As they got there, Jemima broke out in hysterical laughter, "Were you crying earlier in my room? "You were crying like a little girl who had lost her way back home". She began to mimic how Edmund was behaving when he saw her bleeding. "You were like, 'oh my God, oh my God, please don't die, please don't die', you call yourself a man". "On a normal day your screams would have been 'oh Jemima, please don't stop, please don't stop'. "Raymond and my parents would have killed you too if anything had happened to me back there". Edmund had not said a word and his silence got Jemima worried. "Eddie, what is it?", she asked. "I am fine, it's just that I want a little distance between the two of us. "I am sorry if I am sounding forward but I believe you just escaped death by whiskers and I would not have that happen again". "You are important to me",Edmund added. "Are you breaking up with me just after killing a baby for you?, Jemima shot at him. "Far from that, I am just asking you for some space for you to heal then we can get back on track", Edmund said. "Oh, okay, if you say so", Jemima said. He accompanied Jemima to her house, planted a kiss on her forehead and started on his way back home. "That was easy", he said to himself as he knew what the repercussions of what his comments to Jemima were bound to yield. He felt beat up when he woke up from bed. He looked at the time and it was a quarter past 7pm. He took his shower and had his supper. When he got back into his room, he had missed a call from his girlfriend. He gave her a call and she asked him to meet her at their usual venue. He dressed up and went out to meet her. When he got out of the house, he practiced his lines several times since he was not good at break-ups. More especially, he did not know how to tell it to people when they did something wrong. When he got there she was already seated. "Hey boo boo", she said as her face lit up upon seeing him. "Come give me some sugar", she added. "You are seeing the pharmacist guy ain't you?", Edmund cut in. His girlfriend was dumbfounded. "I am not here to judge you, I am just informing you that I don't want to compete with anyone over you". "I am done, I have things in my life that are falling apart and I need to set them straight before they collapse",Edmund said. "I know I wasn't giving you my full attention. Sometimes it was because I had other things going on and it was hard having to juggle all these things and still keep a straight head". "I wish I could go back in time to right the wrongs I did you in the past but that will just be wishful to say the least", Edmund said as he started to get emotional. "Edmund, are you breaking up with me?", his girlfriend who had just come alive after the bombshell he dropped asked. "I never thought it was ever going to get to this stage but yes, I am breaking up with you", Edmund said. "Now that we are on the same page, I wish you luck in life and good-bye. Edmund saw his girlfriend tear up and he knew if he wasted any more time, he would go back on his words and take her into her room for a hot bout of his favourite exercise so he quickly turned and started to walk away. His girlfriend held onto his shirt but he held her hand, turned and said, "Don't make this any harder for us, please. He put her hands by her side and walked into the darkness slowly. He stopped by a supermarket to get some biscuits but as he entered the shop, he was met by loud music and the song he heard playing was 'What a friend we have in Jesus'. He walked out onto the lonely street, the words of the song echoed in his head and for the first time in a long time, he said a prayer. "Dear God, I know I have messed up big time and I know you are mad at me but just like the song, I have realized that I have carried burdens bigger than myself and forfeited the peace that comes from you". "Tonight, I give you me, please help me to make the right choices and take me back". "Please, sweet Lord, lead me to rest because I know only you can give me the kind of peace and rest that nobody can take away", he then continued into the darkness...
I believe that many people can relate with Edmund's escapades. There are many things one can learn from the story. It took a while but Edmund is doing well, both Jemima and his girlfriend are also okay but the scars of what happened are still living with them. One thing I learnt personally is that, when you tell one lie, you would need to tell a hundred others to cover up for the first. As human as we are, there is no telling the number of things that we have to put up with. A lot of things influence our decisions and judgment. More often than not we are in a hurry to find peace, love, satisfaction, happiness, success and all the good things life has to offer. One thing I have come to realize is that nothing in life comes easy and anything that comes into your life fast will leave faster than it came. We all crave for beautiful people with good hearts but sometimes, you cannot always get all you ask for. Life is made up of ups and downs so no need to be in a hurry to get the goodies in life because if this story is anything to go by, one can clearly see that not every beautiful thing is good but on the contrary, all good things also turn out to be beautiful. The issue of sex has taken a different twist in the light of the times we find ourselves in. The same can be said of adolescence and growing up. This story I believe will serve as a wake up call, just like a good friend said and will teach us some lessons going forward. Relationships are hard sometimes, the temptations involved are a lot. Our foundation in a relationship should be clearly established before we send the wrong signals. The story touches on indecisiveness, commitment, the role of effective parental guidance, morality, jealousy, effects of lies, lust, betrayal and the human tendency of only running for help when we hit rock-bottom. Let us use these to mirror our lives and see where we stand. Life is meant to be enjoyed. My name is Edwin Oko Lamptey and this has been a "true story" R.A.T (RANDOM AFRICAN THOUGHT). EDMUND'S ESCAPADES IX
"Why am I even working myself up so much?", Edmund said to himself as his girlfriend joined a commercial bus outside the hospital. "I should be the least surprised because we are all in the game together". Edmund had wanted to walk up to his girlfriend and make her aware of the fact that he had caught her in the act. He had been overwhelmed by the happenings in his life considering his involvement with these particular women so he wanted to find a way of cutting one of them loose. His girlfriend by this act, had provided him with the perfect impetus for a break up. "I can't take this anymore, I think it's about time I did the right thing", Edmund said as his mood changed. "When she calls me tonight, I would let her know that we are done. "I am tired of these things". "I might not be this lucky the next time". "I must be stupid if I allow myself to get to this point again". "I thought I was smart but these ladies have totally outsmarted me with their secret escapades and it seems I am the one at the losing end now". "I better jump ship before it sinks with me onboard". "Come to think of it, some boys will always be boys", Edmund said as he laughed. The young man he saw his girlfriend with was a pharmacist's assistant who assisted him with a drug some time back. He gave the drug to his girlfriend when she was pregnant to abort the baby. The assistant had requested for the lady in question's number so as to tell her how to use the drug and to check up on her so that nothing went amiss in the application of the drug. Little did Edmund know that he would go beyond consultation services to kissing sessions. Edmund had wanted to walk up to him and tell him how disappointed he was in him for playing him like that. "He seemed like an honest gentleman to me", Edmund wondered to himself as he walked back to check up on Jemima. "Let me get this out of the way and deal with the other issues later". "I know just the thing to do". As he drew closer to the gynaecologist's consulting room, he heard voices in the distance. "Leave me alone", he heard Jemima say. "I said don't touch me, please stop it", she added. "Lady, why are you doing this?", a male voice said. Edmund got alarmed so he doubled up and barged into the consulting room. As he did, he saw two female nurses and one male who from all indications, happened to be the gynaecologist on duty. "Young man,who are you and what makes you think you can come into my office uninvited?" "What can I do for you?". "He is with me", Jemima said. "So what?", the doctor countered. "Does that give him the right to come here the way he just did?" "Who are you anyway?", he said as he looked at Edmund. He quickly turned to Jemima and said, "Lady, did you come here to get examined or you came to play hide and seek with my assistants?". "Doctor, I am sorry for my entry but can you tell me if she will be okay?", Edmund asked in a very respectful manner. "I can only answer that question if I have actually done the examination", the gynaecologist said. "This Jemima here" looking on her folder to pronounce her name,"has been giving my assistants here a hard time". She claims only the people she has been intimate with have seen her naked and she cannot stand for strangers, let alone the three of us to see her nakedness". We have been having this tussle for the past ten minutes". "Talk to your sister so I can do my job because I have other patients waiting", the gynaecologist added. "He is not my brother, he is my boyfriend", Jemima said. The gynaecologist looked stunned because Jemima was way older than Edmund to be involved with him. Jemima was six years older than Edmund but she had developed a liking for younger men because she felt they were stronger in bed. Edmund's mother did not approve the friendship between the two of them because of their age difference but it seemed Edmund had told his parents that she was just a friend and nothing more. "But you two are worlds apart", the gynaecologist said. "Doctor please, that is besides the point", Edmund responded looking embarrassed. "Let me talk to her so we can get this over and done with". "Jemima, outside!", Edmund added. "Please allow the man to help you". "I don't want anything to happen to you", Edmund said softly. "Why don't you come and do it for me instead?", Jemima questioned. "We need a professional to do this, Jem". "Just go there, lie down and pretend I am the one, okay?" Edmund added. "I will do it then", Jemima said. "Thanks for understanding". Jemima went back inside, undressed, set her legs apart on the operating table and covered her face with her hands. The doctor got his tools and started to go about his business. After about five minutes of being up inside her, he lifted his head and asked, "Did you two try an abortion?"........ Watch this space for the final episode of EDMUND'S ESCAPADES. EDMUND'S ESCAPADES VIII
Jemima's words echoed in Edmund's ears several times as he stood rooted to the spot where he answered the phone call. The words that kept ringing in his head were, 'dying' and 'blood'. "I have killed Jemima", Edmund said. "Oh my God, I have ended an innocent girl's life", Edmund added as he trembled at the thought of losing Jemima. Now, he did not know whether to continue to the pharmacist's house or to go back and see Jemima. He was so shell-shocked and confused that he began talking to himself. "What if I go back to her place and find her dead or she happens to die in my presence?" "What possible explanation can I render to her parents or my parents?" "What if they involve the police, how would I explain why and how she died?" "Oh God, I have ended a life and I have destroyed my future". "I will definitely go to jail for murder". "Look at where a brief moment of pleasure is about to land me". He stood there lost in thought for a while and suddenly said, "I know what to do". "I will go home and pretend nothing happened". "If I am asked, I would just say I have been home all day and I haven't been to Jemima's". "My mother will vouch for me". "She will be my perfect alibi". "After all, she will not watch on for her only son to be put behind bars". "She has a reputation to protect". "Let Jemima suffer alone". "Rest in peace, Jemima". "The sex was great". He stood there and called the pharmacist twice but there was no answer. He had intended to cover his tracks should the worse happen so, he planned to tell the pharmacist not to mention what transpired between them to any soul, be they living or dead. He began pacing up and down the street corner and was weighing up his options. "What if Jemima is calling for help right now?", he said. "She would definitely mention my name and I would be implicated". "No!". "I can't let that happen!". He decided to go back to Jemima's house to see out the deed. As he got there, Jemima was bleeding but it was not like Edmund had imagined. There were two rags soaked with blood. Edmund went close and saw huge clots of blood wrapped in the rags. "Where did these come from?",he questioned Jemima. "Don't stand there and ask me silly questions!", Jemima yelled. Surprisingly, she claimed she was not in pain. "Eddie, what have you done? See where your insatiable libido is about to land both of us? Jemima said when he got closer. He was trembling because he had not seen such a sight before. Jemima only had on a T-shirt which was almost completely drenched with blood. She was totally naked from her waist downwards. "Oh my Jem, I am very sorry that you had to go through such an ordeal". "I wish I could...", Edmund's phone rang, he thought it was the pharmacist but it was his girlfriend. Edmund quickly put his finger on his lips to signal Jemima to be quiet and whispered to her that it was his mother who was calling. "Hey handsome, you've been avoiding me lately, any reason?", his girlfriend asked. "I need you to accompany me to town". "Don't say no. "I will call you when I am ready". "Love you, bye", she added. Edmund hang up the phone and saw Jemima packing the blood-soaked rags into a black plastic bag. Edmund stood there looking at Jemima's bent over figure and for the first time, no lustful thought came to mind. He was glad that the "operation" was a success. He suddenly remembered the panic attack he had earlier and he was amused by his level of cowardice. Suddenly, Jemima yelled, "Something is coming, Eddie!". Jemima started bleeding again profusely. She went down on her knees and started coughing. One would have expected a different reaction but surprisingly, Edmund broke out in tears, "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God", he cried. "Don't you dare die on me", he added. Jemima looked up, puzzled. She did not know whether to laugh out loud or cry out at Edmund's sudden outburst. She pulled herself together and said, "Young man, you better stop this nonsense and get me to a doctor before I pass out". "You didn't show signs of weakness when you were having me for lunch and dinner". They got ready to visited the hospital. They were directed to go and see the gynaecologist. As Jemima entered the consultation room, Edmund was asked to stay outside. He decided to take a stroll and prayed that he would not run into any of those "gossips" who knew his mother. To his disappointment, he saw a familiar face in a distance. He wanted to confirm it so he drew a bit closer. It was his girlfriend and she was walking hand in hand with another guy who looked familiar to Edmund. The guy escorted Edmund's girlfriend to the gate. As they got there, his girlfriend turned and placed a kiss on the guy's lips. "You snake", Edmund said as he fumed. More soon. EDMUND'S ESCAPADES VII
"Oh my goodness, this whole issue about Raymond made me forget that your health comes first". I went by the pharmacy before coming here and I got you the pregnancy kit just like I promised". As he said this, he bent down and picked up the test kit and skilfully kicked the after pill into the gutter; the cover of darkness just about helped him conceal it before Jemima could catch a glimpse of it. "I thought I saw something else", Jemima said but Edmund brushed the issue aside quickly. He handed the test kit to Jemima. "That was close", he thought to himself. As they waited, it started to get cold outside and Jemima, with her condition, started feeling cold considering the fact that she was putting on a tank top. She knew she was in for trouble with the thought that came to mind but she dared to ask, "Eddie, I am cold, can we cuddle?" Edmund looked at her like a predator ready to pounce on its prey. He remembered her state and cleared his throat. All that while, Jemima closed her eyes firmly as if Edmund was about to spit fire into her face. "Come here, angel cakes",he said softly as he stretched out his arms and pulled her towards his chest and they shared their bodies' warmth. Jemima's phone rang, it was Raymond. He said something had come up so he could no longer make it to her place. Edmund then used the opportunity to put the test kit to use so they headed towards Jemima's room. As Jemima led the way, he picked the after pill and put it in his back pocket at Jemima's blind side. He had Jemima produce some urine sample and he applied it just as the pharmacist had instructed. It turned out to be positive confirming the fact that Jemima had taken in seed; Edmund's seed. Edmund left Jemima's house feeling dejected and confused. He had hoped that Jemima too, like his girlfriend, would also have just been calling the bluff of "motherhood" but it was just not to be. "Jemima is really pregnant", Edmund repeated to himself several times as he took the long road home. He thought of the repercussions of his actions. He jokingly said to himself, "At least I know I am a man, I don't shoot blanks". This thought was marred by the thought of he being a jobless university student who was just about to become a father and was soon going to take up all the full responsibilities of fatherhood. Immediately, he was sure that he was not ready and had to convince Jemima to abort the baby. Two weeks passed and with its passing, Edmund had to keep the issue at hand under wraps. He had to shuttle between his girlfriend and Jemima's house so as not to raise any suspicions. He also kept his dealings to himself so as not to incur the wrath of being put under an investigative lens at home. Edmund had managed to get Jemima to hear him out and got her to reluctantly agree to abort the baby. Jemima too had her own worries. She did not want her parents to find out about the pregnancy so she had to agree to Edmund's request. "What if something goes wrong?", she said in rebuttal to Edmund's suggestion. "What if I lose my womb?" "Would you be man enough to marry me knowing full well that I may not be able to have any children of my own?", she added. "Jem, you worry too much, nothing will go wrong". "Moreover, we are in this together", Edmund said as he went over how the deed was going to be carried out. "We are not in this together Edmund". "I am the one who is pregnant, I am the one who will take whatever drug you are talking about and only God knows the effects the drug is going to have on me". "So we are not in this together, I am all alone in this mess". She rubbed her tummy and said in a soft voice, "Dear one, I don't even know if you are a boy or girl or even if you are twins but if you can hear me, please forgive me for what I am about to do. Edmund was touched by what Jemima had said and turned away quickly for her not to see him tear up. Edmund had earlier consulted a pharmacist who had agreed to help him get rid of the baby. He gave him some pills to give to Jemima to take and was sure the pills were going to get the "job" done. One early morning, Edmund left the house and took the drugs to Jemima. She trembled as she tried to swallow the pills. Immediately the pills went down her throat, she broke down and started sobbing uncontrollably. Edmund therefore consoled her till she was calm. They waited for several hours but nothing was happening. Jemima began getting worried. Edmund decided to go over to the pharmacist's house to give him a progress report and also find out if what was happening was the right thing. He did not want Jemima to know that he was terrified so he used that as an excuse. As he stepped out he thought to himself, "my girlfriend had it much easier because hers didn't take so long". His phone suddenly rang halfway through the journey, it was Jemima and though he had not answered the call, he had already developed cold feet. He answered the call and all he heard was, "Eddie, I am dying, there is blood everywhere"..... Stay tuned. My name is Edwin Oko Lamptey and this is a "true story" RAT (RANDOM AFRICAN THOUGHT). EDMUND'S ESCAPADES VI
Why Raymond? Why so late? I thought they had stopped seeing each other. Why do I feel so jealous? All these questions ran through Edmund's mind in a flash while he still had his hands firmly pressed against Jemima's eyes. Raymond was Jemima's ex-boyfriend or rather, they were part-time lovers. They had been in and out of their relationship six times and Jemima had vowed not to allow a seventh happening. Was Jemima going back on her words? Edmund had realized that there was some "bizarre" passion that filled Jemima's eyes whenever Raymond's case came up but he could not put a finger on it till she dropped this "bombshell". Edmund had to make a decision which he did. He lifted his hands and Jemima turned swiftly, "Did you want me to go blind before lifting those smelling hands of....", before she could complete her sentence her gaze met with Edmund's stern gaze. "Surprise, surprise", Edmund said. "Raymond?" "Really?" "I thought you said you guys were done and that he was seeing someone else". "Is that how you are going to play me?", Edmund added. Jemima was shell-shocked. Both of them knew they had a bargaining chip (Jemima was pregnant and claimed it was Edmund's. Edmund too had just found out that Jemima was still in contact with "notorious" Raymond who could well be the baby's daddy) for a duel so they decided to take it out on each other. They both wanted to present the case to suit themselves so an argument ensued. It was only a matter of time for one of them to eventually cave-in. Edmund, being the one who was hit by the "unexpected turn of events" took the first swing,"What makes you so attached to him anyway?" "What are you saying Eddie", Jemima started with tears already rolling down her cheeks. "I am over Raymond, I am into you now". "He only said he might pass by because he was in the neighbourhood so I came to wait for him to hear what he had to say". "You are here accusing me of something I have the least intention to do". Edmund suddenly started off like a pissed off pistol, "That is how it all starts, little meet-ups, phone calls to check on you, attributes to make you blush, pet names will follow, the first night-out together and you know what all that leads to", he added. "Is that what you think of me?" Do you think I would allow myself to be tricked by him again?", Jemima said sobbing. "Wait a minute, I hope all these concocted accusations are not in anyway directed towards you shying away from this pregnancy". "If that is your idea, if that is what you even so much as think of insinuating then you've got another thing coming young man because this thing going on up here", drawing a circle round her tummy, "is all you". Edmund had not thought of using what just transpired between them as a cover and even if Edmund thought he could use Raymond's brouhaha as a "cash-cow" to shift responsibility, it just accidentally blew up in his face. "I guess we have to take care of this Raymond thing once and for all" Edmund said. He decided to wait outside with Jemima for Raymond and had planned to tell him to stay away from Jemima. They sat together in silence. It was quite amazing that Edmund had suddenly grown so jealous. "Would Jemima act any differently should she find out of my other escapades?", he thought to himself. "I think I deserve what's coming to me". I have been very unfair to these ladies". "Should I tell her the truth?" "If there ever is an opportune moment to come clean with her, this is the time" Jemima did not like the idea of these two gentlemen meeting because she knew it was going to be a recipe for disaster. She silently thought to herself, "Ray is going to beat up this boy because he says he wants us to set things right." "I love both these guys and I do not want to lose any of them". "Dear God, why is it so hard to be a woman?". As they sat in waiting, Edmund remembered that he still had the pregnancy test kit he had intended to give to his girlfriend in his pocket. He dipped his hands in his pocket to bring the kit out and the after pill also fell. " What are those?" Jemima asked.... More in a bit. EDMUND'S ESCAPADES V
Jemima's brother, Fred opened the gate but like every guilty person, as the gate flung open, Edmund thought it was going to be Jemima who opened it so he braced himself for a "crash landing" only to be welcomed by little Fred, "Oh it's just you", Edmund said in a squeaky tone as he swallowed some saliva. Suddenly, what Edmund had just said dawned on him. "How are you my boss?", he added, to make up for the earlier comment. "Is Jemima at home?". "Yes, she is washing in the backyard", Fred said. Fred then jokingly yelled, "Jemima, the police woman's son is here to see you". Edmund's mother was known as the neighbourhood's watchdog so the children in the neighbourhood nicknamed her "the police woman". Edmund saw Jemima charging at him like a raging bull from a distance. His eyes could also not help but notice the drenched T-shirt she had on which had been made transparent by the water revealing her voluptuous bosoms and the rage caused them to dangle, which he thought was a pleasing sight. He had to quickly move from cloud nine to earth to quell the approaching storm. "What was that?", Jemima yelled as she got to where Edmund was standing. "What was what?", Edmund responded innocently as if he was being wrongly accused. "Where is your phone?", "A lady called me with your number, who was that?, "Do you think you can make me jealous?". Jemima kept firing at Edmund. Edmund stood there confused and Jemima realized it. Like the cunning fellow he was, he used it perfectly to his advantage, "I am at a loss for words". "I wish I had an idea of what you are talking about now". "Me?" "Called you?" "I haven't called you the whole of today and I am sure it was one of those scrambled network calls where someone tries to call another person and it bounces off to a complete stranger". "Come to think of it, did the person sound like me?", Edmund said. Jemima knew close to zero about telecommunications and the voice on the other end was feminine so her argument was floored by the "genius" Edmund. "I just hope that what you are saying is the case and not something else", Jemima said. Edmund followed Jemima to the backyard and they had a hearty chat till Jemima popped up with "Eddie, what are we going to do about the pregnancy?". "I am worried", she added with her eyes almost filling up with tears. Edmund wondered how women were able to change their moods so swiftly. One minute they are happy and the next minute they are sad. He had to assure her of her safety so he looked into her eyes and said "everything will be fine". "I will buy a pregnancy test kit so we do the test tomorrow okay?". That being said, they shared a kiss and Edmund found an excuse to leave her house. He went to the pharmacy and bought the after pill and pregnancy test kit. He went home, took his supper and a shower and started towards his girlfriend's house. As he walked down the quiet street, he whispered something like a prayer or so he thought. As he got to her house, she was not at home so he turned to leave. As he got to the gate, his girlfriend was also about entering the house so they met. "Hi love, I am just coming from the store down the street, "I had run out of sanitary pads". I have just had my monthly period, I guess I was not pregnant like I felt". Edmund could not contain the good news but he also had to keep his composure to avoid any trouble. He lifted his girlfriend into his hands and carried her to the door, "You must be tired from walking so let me give you a little treat", he said. He left his girlfriend's house feeling like he had won the lottery. He was so relieved that he felt like shouting but his joy was short-lived because he still had to deal with Jemima's "issue". He decided to pay Jemima a visit. She was sitting in front of her house when he got there but her back was turned towards him so he tip-toed towards her and covered her eyes with his hands from behind her. "Raymond, I have told you to stop doing that and what kept you so long?" Edmund, the master of secrets was caught off guard. Now he did not know whether to lift his hands and ask questions or whether to wish that he had not made the decision of going to see her. He wished that the ground could just break open and swallow him up. Was Edmund the only one keeping secrets?......... More to be revealed soon. EDMUND'S ESCAPADES IV
After the line went dead, Edmund sat in the couch as if he had been dazed by a haymaker in a boxing match. Thoughts started flooding through his mind and like every flirt, he had to think up a thousand and one responses to whatever interrogation that was going to follow after such an unforseen situation. "You are cheating on me again right?", his girlfriend said with mixed reactions. He could not tell whether the reactions with which she spoke were that of pain or rage. He could always see through her but this time, he could not fathom what was going through her head. His mind cast back to the last time such an incident happened, he had to run for cover because she threw a fit of rage that was filled with deadly intent. He had to prevent such an altercation from happening again so he had to think long and deep "Edmund, improvise" was what he heard ringing in his head. In a split second, he hugged her tightly and steered her clear of anything she could turn into a weapon. He whispered into her ear "I would be crazy to cheat on you, I mean who else would I need if I have you? I have loved you for a thousand years and I am going to love you for a thousand more". Those were the exact words he had told Jemima about a week ago. He took the lines out of his "flirting playbook" and hoped that it was going to fly. Instantly, his girlfriend melted at the words coupled with the warm hug. "If I had my way, I would not let you keep female friends because you know I am jealous and you know I love you so much" she said. The words were said so graciously that Edmund knew immediately what was bound to follow. Edmund lay on the carpet with his girlfriend's head on his bare chest while he stroke his hand through her hair. "I am such a sweet-talker. I wonder why God created women the way he did, they would believe anything you tell them provided you added a little emotion and an intense look in your eyes". Edmund had always known that he was made for the "wild ones". According to him, nothing brought out the "fire" in him like a woman who could throw a fit at the least provocation and was equally capable of loving incomprehensibly with all her will. This was what got him so attached to his girlfriend. He loved the aggression mixed with the passion, he even loved more the way you could not predict easily what her next move was going to be. He did not like women who were easy to predict because he knew he could easily manipulate them. "Baby, have you done a pregnancy test?", Edmund asked. "No", she replied. "I just know I am pregnant, I feel something moving in my tummy". Edmund laughed and said "So when was your menstruation due this month?". She replied, I am a day late. Edmund sat up knowing what had just happened, his heart missed several beats and he said in a shaking voice "But sweets, you should have told me before all this" pointing to the carpet. " My angel, are you thinking about you or us, because you know this is serious right?", he queried in a somewhat angry tone. He asked her to give him a loan to buy an after pill and a pregnancy test kit because he was low on cash. "How much?", she asked. His face lit up and he said, "just give me enough". She took her purse and doled out money to him. He quickly dressed up and sped off to town. He told her he was going to be back at 6pm. As he stepped out, he remembered Jemima so he took a detour and headed towards Jemima's house. On his way, he had to think up a lie to tell Jemima to convince her that the phone call she received was nothing serious. Before he got to Jemima's junction he had thought of a plan. He had turned into someone different from the day he resolved to be involved with two women. In his heart of hearts, he did not like who he had become but he could not help but enjoy the adrenaline rush that came with his actions. He knocked at Jemima's gate and said to himself, "onto the next one"...... The story continues... EDMUND'S ESCAPADES III
Edmund answered the phone and spoke gently as if his life depended on it. His girlfriend wanted him to come over to her house. He did not know why but he had no option. She spoke in a lively manner as compared to what ensued between them last night so he took it as a peace offering. From the way she spoke he gathered that she had not been in contact with his mum. He called her all the pet names imaginable and told her he was going to be there as soon as possible. He hang up the phone and walked proudly back into the kitchen like a peacock. In his mind, his mother was not bound to find out his mischievous action yet and he meant to keep it that way. He went into the kitchen and told his mum that he had wanted to discuss school matters with her but he had to meet his boys in town first. He hurriedly took his shower and sped off towards his girlfriend's house. On his way, it dawned on him that his girlfriend had been extremely gently over the phone, which was quite unusual of her. He had to be careful, gentle and cautious all at once. He took the first measure of carefully going through his phone and deleting any "engagements" he had with Jemima and the other ladies that he "harmlessly" flirted with. "Why do I have to put myself through this kind of hide and seek?" He questioned himself. He knew that all hell was going to break loose should his girlfriend find anything close to a suspicious message on his phone. He got to her house and knocked at the door. He was summoned to enter. Upon entering he knew that his girlfriend was definitely going to let him in on some action despite her condition. She was lying in a couch and was dressed fully but he knew her too well and had flawlessly learnt her body language. His face lit up as he smiled from temple to temple. He said to himself, "this is a sight to behold". He took a seat on the same couch waiting for the opportune moment. She kept pressing her body against him as if to test him. She eventually put her head on his lap while they chatted. Like clockwork, she requested to have his phone. Edmund knew too well that succumbing too easily to the request was going to raise eyebrows and also putting up a fight for too long would equally be suspicious so he had to time it such that it somewhat fell in between the two. He gave the phone to her. She went through his messages but she was not fruitful. She wanted to find a way of pinning some dirt on him just like the way the police at the checkpoints do when they realize that your books are in check. She went through his call logs. She had caught him off guard. He had not taken the time to scrutinize that section. She angrily quizzed "who is Jemima and why did you call her two times yesterday?" She added "don't worry, I would find out for myself". Edmund's day had literally turned into a nightmare in a matter of seconds. She dialled the number but there was no response the first time. Upon the second attempt, there was a response on the other end, "Hello Eddie, where are you?", Jemima asked. "Hello" Edmund's girlfriend said in response. "Who are you?", is what Jemima seemed to have asked because Edmund's girlfriend answered "who are you too? The line went dead because Jemima hang up. Now all the burden of proof lay on Edmund to defend himself. Was all hell going to break loose? He had planned to use the rapport they had created to ask her to do the unthinkable bit the phone call had dashed that hope from right under his feet. Stay tuned.
